My name is Shea Formanes, and I am a queer Filipino-American writer/filmmaker from New York City, currently based in Seattle. The daughter of a Filipina immigrant and a first-generation Filipino American, I'm descended from a curiosity-driven, immigrant family of scientists, nurses, cartographers, and stay-at-home parents.
Inspired by stories told around the dinner table, I tell sci-fi/drama stories about complicated families, especially BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities, who deal with the aftermath of traumatic events by healing through trust. A recent English Honors graduate and Dean's Medal nominee from the University of Washington, my works include the queer coming-of-age short film, The Kettle and the sci-fi/drama stage play, Bahay Kubo. Most recently, I was the 1st AD apprentice in the Action! Narrative Apprenticeship Program at the Northwest Film Forum, where I worked on the black comedy short film, Bab's Bouquets, and was selected for the highly competitive Above the Line - Education Forum program through Washington Filmworks, which mentors emerging marginalized filmmakers in the Washington area.
Grounded by my desire to tell emotionally-driven tales of friendship and trust, and inspired by the naturalistic folklore of Filipino mythology, I wrote, directed and co-edited my debut feature film, I Watched Her Grow, which has started its festival circuit in Spring 2024.
